Well, Friday, Feb 4th was a great night for us!! A capacity crowd came out to raise money for Habitat for Humanity to assist in building livable shelters for victims of the Tsunami in Southeast Asia. Thanks go to Kent Gulley for the putting the idea forward, Matt Foy for championing the cause and making phone calls, press releases, Nat Foy for helping to organize the auction (and donating artwork), Ruth Reid for donated artwork, Rob Sacchetto for donated artwork, CKLU 96.7FM for donated door prizes, The Desjardins family for owning a bar that let's us do this... and bringing in food for snacking, Habitat for Humanity... a worthwhile group that does important work all around the world with the goal that every person on the planet has the right to habitable and safe living environment (Karen and Jim for coming out for the evening)and of course, the musicians who played for free... Andrew Scinto, Brian Dunn, True Theories, The Panties and The Mondo Idols.
We kicked the evening off spinning some old Reggae, Ska and Rocksteady. Guitarist Andrew Scinto kicked us off with some old songs from the Greenhorn days and a couple recent tunes... always a golden voice and great sense of melody. Brian Dunn came up next and played some favourites from his catelogue of November All-Stars material...Watch for a November All-Stars CD Release party on Easter Weekend in March. True Theories came up next to rhyme their way through a set of blazing heavy groove hip hop. The absence of their regular DJ was made up by Lee Service of Far From Heroes operating their backing tracks, plus O.B. dropped a couple records on the turntables for a little freestyle session. The Panties rocked next with Crissy, Billy, Chewy, Amanda and Kent brewing up a firestorm of 70's punk energy. The Panties consistently deliver a mix of snarl and bubblegum in their own material and a couple of choice covers from the likes of The Demics and The Monks. True Theories filled the dancefloor, The Panties got the floor all wet and sticky, and then the Mondo Idols wiped it up with a full set of skanking at the end of the night. The Mondo Idols played some of Matt Foy's new songs from his s/t record, plus a few killer selections from Bob Marley, Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals and the Melodians. Watch for the Mondo Idols next gig on Sunday, Feb6th after the superbowl when they do a Bob Marley 60th birthday party.
Thanks to all who came out and supported this night. We raised over $1500 for Habitat for Humanity. Watch in March for a fundraising event for a local filmmaker, Greg Tremblay, with 5 bands and screenings of scenes already filmed.
